138-07-03-15 Gesture Vocalizer

Hey there!  Welcome to Accessibility Minute, your weekly look at Assistive Technology, those clever tools and devices designed to help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing or other special needs!

There is a new prototype being introduced called the "Gesture Vocalizer", which translates sign language into audio and text.  The Gesture Vocalizer consists of three components: a glove with sensors, an accelerometer connected to a "control section", and an LCD screen with audio.

The team behind the prototype explains the glove's sensors determine the bending of the fingers, and the accelerometer measures the tilting of the hand.  Once these gestures are captured by the glove, they're sent to the control section which has a database of sign language gestures.  The captured movements are then matched with stored database gestures and the pre-recorded audio equivalent is spoken and text for those signs is displayed on the screen.
