197-08-19-16 TippyTalk App for Autism

Hey there! Welcome to Accessibility Minute, your weekly look at Assistive Technology, those clever tools and devices designed to help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing or other special needs!

There are so many AAC devices and apps already available on the market, so it may be hard to decide which ones may work best for your child. TippyTalk is developed for individuals who are nonverbal and is a little different from other communication apps. In sum, it works by translating images into text messages. The messages are then sent to a family member or caregiver on their phone or tablet. This allows the individual who is otherwise nonverbal to communicate and express a need, want, or feeling. Unlike many other apps and devices, TippyTalk isn't restricted by distance, so the other person can be anywhere in the world!

The app also reinforces language development, by allowing the parent or caregiver to record their voice over each image. The app has learning capability and will evolve as the needs of your child do! According to the TippyTalk website, "No other product on the market today is offering the personalization, social communication, and independence that TippyTalk is providing."

The TippyTalk app is available on both Android and Apple devices. Check out for more information.
