Accessibility Minute - Assistive Technology Tips and Tricks for Everyone

Dec 18, 2020

Hey there! Welcome to Accessibility Minute, your weekly look at Assistive Technology, those clever tools, and devices designed to help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing, or other special needs!

If you or a loved one are blind or visually impaired and are shopping for a new mobile phone, check out the BlindShell Classic phone!  The BlindShell Classic is a phone developed for - and by - individuals with visual impairments.

Unlike a majority of smartphones available on the market today, this one features a physical keyboard making it more user-friendly.  The physical keyboard consists of large, tactile buttons.  It also features a large digital display that provides visual feedback in a "large, bold, customizable font."

Another feature of the BlindShell Classic is the phone's Object Tagging application.  Users are able to take pictures of objects to help distinguish between items (like canned foods) within seconds!

Other features include:

  • Basic phone functions include calling, texts, email, notes, alarm, timer
  • More advanced functions include object tagging, MP3 player, a physical SOS button in case of emergency, and more
  • More than 30 applications and functions built-in to the smartphone
  • Users can control the phone with their voice using simple commands
