233-04-28-17 Squirrel Devices Tactile Caliper
Hey there! Welcome to Accessibility Minute, your weekly look at Assistive Technology, those clever tools and devices designed to help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing or other special needs!
Developers at Squirrel Devices have designed the Tactile Caliper, a geometry instrument for persons with blindness to measure and draw with accuracy and speed.  The Tactile Caliper is simple to use and provides braille output to 1/16th of an inch.
The Tactile Caliper displays readings directly in braille, giving instant results.  The caliper's design allows for small objects to be inserted into the caliper's opening, which eliminates common problems for students who have difficulty holding the ruler steady.  It is not yet available in centimeter measurements and can only measure objects 12 inches or less in size.
The caliper is available for $18 from the National Braille Press Visit for more information!
