Accessibility Minute - Assistive Technology Tips and Tricks for Everyone

Jan 29, 2021

Hey there! Welcome to Accessibility Minute, your weekly look at Assistive Technology, those clever tools and devices designed to help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing or other special needs!

If you're looking for a fun way for your young Braille learner to practice Braille, check out BrailleBuzz!  BrailleBuzz is a fun instructional toy shaped like a bumblebee.  It features tactile buttons with Braille letters and numbers on them.  According to American Printing House's description, "this toy encourages practice with Braille characters and phonics, similarly to a variety of audio-based toys that teach print writing."

Features of BrailleBuzz include:

3 modes of play:
PHONICS MODE: fun sound and letter associations are made
KEYBOARD MODE: all key combinations are announced with dot numbers
LETTERS MODE: dot number announcement reinforces the relationship between reading letters and writing on keyboard
Helps develop finger dexterity and Braille keyboarding
Honeycomb buttons with Braille on them speak letters aloud in a friendly human voice
Weighs 2 pounds
