Hey there! Welcome to Accessibility Minute, your weekly look
at Assistive Technology, those clever tools and devices designed to
help people who have difficulties with vision, mobility, hearing or
other special needs!
More than 70 million people worldwide stutter, which is about
1% of the population. In the US alone, there are over 3
million people who stutter. SpeechEasy is an
innovative device that can be used to reduce or eliminate
stuttering.
SpeechEasy looks similar to a hearing aid. However,
rather than amplifying sound, it alters sounds that go through the
device so that you hear your voice at a slight time delay and at a
different pitch. It was inspired by a natural
phenomenon called the "choral effect." The choral effect
happens when your stutter is dramatically reduced or eliminated
when you speak or sing in unison with other people.
